Beer bread

Beer bread

Tonight I made bread using the spent grain that my husband used to brew his beer with. I’m not sure exactly what kind of grains they are, but I think it’s wheat, rye caramel malt? Something like that anyways. I had never made a loaf of bread in my life, so I’m pretty proud that it didn’t turn out to be a complete disaster.

I used:

  • 3 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 cup wheat flour
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 2 tsp. yeast
  • 3 cups spent grain
  • ¼ cup of sugar
  • ¼ cup of butter
  • 1 egg (Beaten)
  • 1 cup of milk

Mixed together the first 6 ingredients, then the last 3 until dough pulled away from sides of bowl and all ingredients were well mixed. I used my hand mixer with the dough hook beaters for about 5 minutes or so.

Then I shaped the dough into a ball  in an oiled bowl to rise for about and hour and a half.  Next I squished the dough out into a rectangle and divided it into 3 equal portions. Then put each into a greased loaf pan to rise for about another hour. Then I scored top of loaves, and baked in a 350 degree preheated oven for about 45 minutes.
